MyMP, 3MP's new digital radio station - Review - Listen online, live stream - DAB+, Easy Listening Music
It's Melbourne's new 'home of easy listening' radio station on a budget.
Background: In April 2010, 1377 3MP was changed to a talkback station. The music was subsequently moved to a digital-only station on DAB radio, under the MyMP brand - 'My Melbourne, My Music, My MP'.
MyMP now: The station has now morphed into a completely automated form with no announcers or Disc Jockeys. Initially the station was launched with no ads, but more recently (May 2010), about one advertisment is played every half hour. A disadvantage for some listeners is the lack of an hourly news segment.
The station shares the same DAB transmitter as MTR 1377, which further saves on costs. The bitrate also seems a tad too low, causing metallic-sounding artifacts to be heard on the higher notes of songs. The audio quality is worse than analogue FM.
All the stalwarts are still on the air including John Farnham, Bee Gees, ABBA, etc. Even the Dances with Wolves soundtrack is still peppered amongst the playlists. There are still the occasional 'flashbacks' to classic popular songs of the 60s and 70s.
However, much newer, contemporary styles are being introduced onto the MyMP playlist, including the likes of James Blunt, Alanis Morissette, Craig David, Delta Goodrem and even Gwen Stefani. Overall, the music selection has been modernised, albeit with songs that don't quite fit the 'easy listening' category. The old 3MP targeted the 45+ year old listener market. MyMP's new demographic now seems to be 30+ year olds.
On analogue AM, the station used to get away with playing the likes of Michael Jackson under the guise of 'easy listening' because the limited frequency response of an AM transmission 'mellowed out' the sound. On DAB+, you get the full gamut of audio frequencies (near CD quality), which accentuates the 'rocky-ness' of upbeat songs. Falling asleep to the new mix may be a bit harder.
Being one of only a few digital-only stations on the market, it can be hard to justify the purchase of a DAB+ radio just to see what's on offer. So, we have the following for you:
We have setup a temporary online streaming service where you can 'sample' the new station. You'll then be able to decide whether buying a DAB+ radio is worthwhile or not.
The streaming service is simply connected to a DAB+ receiver tuned to MyMP. To listen, point your favourite media player (such as Windows Media Player or Winamp) to:
http://stream.webdevsys.com:8000/mymp.m3u
Due to bandwidth limitations, a maximum of 4 listeners can listen to this stream at any one time. Service availability is not guaranteed.
Note: we are NOT affiliated with MyMP or Pacific Star, the owners of the station. We are only providing this service as a courtesy to prospective listeners so they can make an informed decision on whether they should purchase a DAB+ receiver or not.
Please let us know what you think of the new digital radio station.
Update 13 May 2011: MyMP now appears to have brought back their announcers! The line up includes Mark Johnson and John Tamb. The station now seems less automated and the music selections have improved, with noticeably less repetition, as was the case in the preceeding months.
